Japanese Industrial Standards
- JIS is a comprehensive system of standards used for industrial activities in Japan, developed and maintained by the Japanese Industrial Standards Committee (JISC) and published by the Japanese Standards Association (JSA)
History of JIS
- Origins trace back to the Meiji era, when private enterprises were responsible for setting standards
- Japanese Engineering Standard established in 1921, summarising existing standards
- Simplified standards were introduced during World War II to boost production
- Japanese Standard Association was founded in 1946 after Japan’s defeat in World War II
- Industrial Standardization Law enacted in 1949, providing legal framework
- Law revised in 2004, with new JIS mark introduced, along with a transition period
JIS Mark
- The Commercial Standardizing Law was revised in 2004, modifying the "JIS mark" (product documentation system)
- Since October 1st, 2005, the new JIS mark has been applied for re-certification
- The old mark was authorized for use for a three-year transition period (until September 30, 2008)
