Postpartum Hemorrhage

  • Types of early postpartum hemorrhage:

    • Uterine atony: soft, high fundus, difficult to feel through abdominal wall, heavy lochia or large clots, bladder distention, high uterus usually displaced to one side. Possible signs of hypovolemic shock
    • Lacerations: continuous trickle of blood, brighter than normal lochia, firm fundus
    • Hematoma: soft, high, potentially difficult to feel through woman's abdominal wall, heavy lochia, often with large clots or sometimes a persistent moderate flow, bladder distention, high uterus usually displaced to one side, Possible signs of hypovolemic shock.
