Study Notes
Lymph Nodes and Vessels
- The external jugular vein is accompanied by superficial cervical lymph nodes.
- The deep nodes drain into the jugular trunk on the right side, and into the thoracic duct on the left side.
- On the right side, the deep nodes drain into the right lymphatic duct.
- On the left side, the deep nodes drain into the thoracic duct.
- The thoracic duct drains into the junction of the left subclavian and internal jugular veins.
- The thoracic duct is located in the mediastinum and thoracic cavity.
- The right lymphatic duct drains into the junction of the right subclavian and internal jugular veins.
- The right lymphatic duct is located in the root of the neck.
Scalene Muscles
- There are three scalene muscles: anterior, middle, and posterior.
- The scalene muscles elevate the first and second ribs during inspiration.
Posterior Triangle of the Neck
- The posterior boundary of the posterior triangle is formed by the trapezius muscle.
- The anterior boundary of the posterior triangle is formed by the sternocleidomastoid muscle.
- The inferior boundary of the posterior triangle is formed by the clavicle.
Nerves and Arteries
- The spinal accessory nerve is responsible for innervating the sternocleidomastoid and trapezius muscles.
- The cervical nerves (C2-C4) provide sensory innervation to the skin of the posterior triangle of the neck.
- The transverse cervical artery, a branch of the subclavian artery, supplies the posterior triangle of the neck.
- The external jugular vein opens into the subclavian vein and is located within the posterior triangle of the neck.
- The vagus nerve is contained within the carotid sheath and has many important functions.
- The phrenic nerve is responsible for motor innervation of the diaphragm.
- The brachial plexus lies behind the anterior scalene muscle and is formed by the ventral rami of spinal nerves C5-T1.
