- Glesbygder som öknar, stäpper och polarområden har få människor på grund av vatten- eller brist på näringsrik jord.
- Industrialiseringen ändrade bosättningsmönster, fabriker byggdes där det fanns stenkol, vilket skapade industriområden.
- Stora industriområden växte fram i Storbritannien, Tyskland, Polen, Ryssland, USA, Kina och Indien.
