Polyphonic Music in the 13th Century
Notre Dame School
- A group of composers associated with Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, active from 1160 to 1250
- Developed and refined polyphonic music
- Composers:
- Léonin (fl. 1150-1200)
- Pérotin (fl. 1180-1220)
Organum
- A type of polyphonic music characterized by a plainchant melody accompanied by one or more voices
- Developed in the 9th century, but reached its peak in the 12th and 13th centuries
- Features:
- Parallel motion: voices move in parallel intervals
- Oblique motion: one voice moves while the other remains static
- Contrary motion: voices move in opposite directions
- Types of organum:
- Diaphony: two voices moving in parallel motion
- Copula: two voices moving in oblique motion
