    Kidney Structure and Components

    • Renal Pyramids: Cone-shaped tissues within the kidney where urine is collected before it moves to the renal pelvis. Each kidney contains 8 to 18 pyramids.

    • Interlobar Veins: Blood vessels that drain blood from the renal cortex and renal pyramids, leading it towards the renal vein. They run between the renal lobes.

    • Renal Arteries: Major blood vessels supplying oxygenated blood to the kidneys. They branch off from the abdominal aorta and enter each kidney at the hilum.

    • Renal Vein: The vessel that carries deoxygenated blood away from the kidney and returns it to the inferior vena cava. It collects blood from interlobar veins.

    • Renal Pelvis: The funnel-shaped structure that collects urine from the renal pyramids and transports it to the ureter. It is located at the center of the kidney.

    • Ureter: Tube that carries urine from the renal pelvis to the bladder. Each kidney has one ureter extending downwards.

    • Capsule: Fibrous outer layer surrounding each kidney. It provides protection and maintains the kidney’s shape.

    • Cortex: The outer layer of the kidney, located between the capsule and the medulla. It contains renal corpuscles and renal tubules, involved in filtration and reabsorption of blood.
