Study Notes
- An air compressor takes in air at atmospheric pressure, compresses it, and delivers it at a higher pressure to the pneumatic system, converting mechanical energy into pneumatic energy.
- Electric motors supply mechanical power to the compressor, converting electrical energy into mechanical energy.
Air Generation System
- A pressure switch controls the electric motor by sensing the pressure in the tank, stopping the motor at a maximum pressure and restarting it at a minimum pressure.
- A check valve lets compressed air from the compressor into the tank and prevents it from leaking back when the compressor is stopped.
- A tank stores compressed air and stabilizes it by compensating for pressure fluctuations.
- When the pressure in the reservoir drops below a certain value, the compressor compensates until the set higher value is reached, so the compressor does not need to operate continuously
- A pressure gauge indicates the tank pressure.
- An auto drain automatically removes water condensing in the tank.
- A safety valve releases compressed air if the tank pressure exceeds the allowed limit.
- A refrigerated air dryer cools the compressed air to a few degrees above freezing, condensing most of the air humidity, which avoids water in the downstream system.
- A line filter in the main pipe has minimal pressure drop and can remove oil mist, keeping the line free from dust, water, and oil.
Air Distribution & Consumption System
- Air is taken off from the top of the main pipe to allow occasional condensate to stay in the main pipe.
- When the condensate reaches a low point, a water take off from beneath the pipe will flow into an Automatic Drain and the condensate will be removed
- Every descending tube should have a drain at its lowest point, and the most efficient method is an Auto Drain, which prevents water from remaining in the pipeline.
- An air service unit conditions compressed air to provide clean air at optimum pressure and may add lubricant to extend the life of pneumatic system components that need it.
- A directional valve alternately pressurizes and exhausts the cylinder connections to control the direction of movement.
- An actuator transforms the potential energy of the compressed air into mechanical work; this can be a linear cylinder or a rotary actuator.
- Speed controllers allow easy and stepless speed adjustment of the actuator movement.
