Study Notes
Elements of Visual and Performing Arts
- Visual arts elements are line, color, texture, perspective, space, form, volume, light, and shadow.
- Line: Used to represent figures and forms in painting or sculpture. Lines have direction and are always moving, either straight or curved.
- Horizontal lines: Suggest repose and serenity, associated with calmness and quietude, found in reclining figures, landscapes, and the horizon.
- Vertical lines: Suggest action, poise, balance, force, aspiration, and dynamism. Associated with a sense of dignity, found in standing figures and tall structures.
- Diagonal lines: Suggest action, life, and movement, adding animation to any composition.
- Curved lines: Suggest grace, subtleness, direction, instability, movement, and flexibility, often associated with feelings of joyousness.
- Crooked or jagged lines: Express energy, violence, conflict, and struggle. Can be classified into lines that repeat, contrast, or transitions.
- Color: Has the greatest aesthetic appeal. Color is a property of light, reflected to the eye.
- The light spectrum contains: violet, indigo, blue, green, yellow, orange, and red.
- White, black, and gray lack color quality and are called neutral colors.
- Hue: The dimension of color that gives it its name. Examples: red, blue, yellow. Primary hues (red, blue, yellow) combine to form secondary hues (orange, green, violet).
- Value (Chiaroscuro): The lightness or darkness of a color. Tints are values above the normal, and shades are values below the normal.
- Intensity: The brightness or darkness of a color, giving color strength.
- Color Harmonies:
- Related: Monochromatic (tones of one hue), Adjacent (neighboring hues).
- Contrasted: Complementary (hues directly opposite each other).
- Psychology of Colors: Colors carry varied psychological and emotional connotations.
- Black: Associated with death and gloom.
- White: Associated with purity.
- Pink: Associated with thankfulness.
- Red: Associated with love.
- Blue: Associated with peace.
- Texture: Deals with the sense of touch, describing the surface characteristics of an object (rough, smooth, coarse, shiny, dull). Felt best when physically touching the object.
- Perspective: Deals with how distance affects the appearance of objects, how the eye judges spatial relationships.
- Linear perspective: Depicts the appearance of distance using converging lines. Objects appear smaller as they recede into the distance.
- Aerial perspective: Depicts relative distances by gradations of tone and color.
- Space: Crucial in painting and architecture, the exterior and interior of a building is seen in relation to the space in which it is situated.
- Form: The overall design, describing the structure or shape of an object. The way form is used in an artwork directs the movements of an observer's eyes. Form includes size and volume.
- Regular Forms: Shapes with consistent, symmetrical, and orderly relationships. These shapes include the platonic solids (cube, tetrahedron, octahedron, dodecahedron, icosahedron).
- Irregular Forms: Shapes with inconsistent, asymmetrical, and dynamic relationships. Irregular shapes are usually a combination, or alteration, of regular shapes.
