What is PLC
- A programmable controller (PLC) is a solid-state device that belongs to the computer family.
- It stores instructions to implement control functions such as sequencing, timing, counting, arithmetic, data manipulation, and communication.
- PLCs control industrial machines and processes.
History of PLC
- The design criteria for the first programmable controller were specified in 1968 by General Motors Corp.
- In the 1970s, communication abilities emerged.
- In the 1980s, standardization on communication protocols occurred.
- In the 1990s, standardization on programming language took place.
Prior to PLCs
- Devices used contactors and relays that were hard-wired together.
- Circuits had to be designed and drawn up first.
- Components were specified and installed.
- Electricians would then wire everything together.
Advantages of PLC
- PLCs can perform the same tasks as hard-wired devices.
- Connections between field devices and relay contacts take place in the PLC.
- Installation is less extensive with PLCs.
- PLCs can perform more complex functions than hard-wired devices.
