Definition and Theory

  • Plate tectonics is a scientific theory that describes the movement of the Earth's lithosphere (outer layer)
  • The theory proposes that the Earth's surface is divided into large plates that move relative to each other

Key Components

  • Lithosphere: the outermost solid layer of the Earth, broken into several large plates
  • Asthenosphere: the more fluid layer beneath the lithosphere, allowing for plate movement
  • Plates: large, rigid slabs of the lithosphere that fit together like a jigsaw puzzle

Plate Boundaries

  • Divergent boundaries: where plates move apart, new crust is formed, and magma rises to fill the gap
