Global Landforms: Plate Tectonics
Definition and Theory
- Plate tectonics is a scientific theory that describes the movement of the Earth's lithosphere (outer layer)
- The theory proposes that the Earth's surface is divided into large plates that move relative to each other
Key Components
- Lithosphere: the outermost solid layer of the Earth, broken into several large plates
- Asthenosphere: the more fluid layer beneath the lithosphere, allowing for plate movement
- Plates: large, rigid slabs of the lithosphere that fit together like a jigsaw puzzle
Plate Boundaries
- Divergent boundaries: where plates move apart, new crust is formed, and magma rises to fill the gap
- Convergent boundaries: where plates collide, resulting in subduction (one plate is pushed beneath another) or collision (plates push against each other)
- Transform boundaries: where plates slide past each other horizontally
Processes and Landforms
- Seafloor spreading: the process of new oceanic crust being created at mid-ocean ridges
- Continental drift: the movement of continents across the Earth's surface
- Mountain building: the formation of mountain ranges through plate convergence
- Volcanic activity: the formation of volcanoes at plate boundaries
- Earthquakes: the result of plate movement and stress buildup at plate boundaries
