Study Notes

Plant Tissue

  • Plant tissues are of two types: meristematic tissue and permanent tissue.
  • Meristematic tissue is found at growing points of a plant, such as tips of roots, stems, and branches.
  • Permanent tissues are made up of either living or dead cells, which have lost their ability to multiply.

Simple Permanent Tissues

  • There are three types of simple permanent tissues: parenchyma, collenchyma, and sclerenchyma.
  • Parenchyma cells have thin cell walls, are oval, spherical, or polygonal in shape, and have spaces between them.
  • Collenchyma cells have thick cell walls, are living, and are found in non-woody plants, leaf stalks, and veins of leaves.
  • Collenchyma provides support and flexibility to the plant.
  • Sclerenchyma cells have thick cell walls, are dead, and are found in stems and veins of leaves.
  • Sclerenchyma provides strength and protection to the plant.

Complex Permanent Tissues

  • Complex permanent tissues consist of two conducting tissues: xylem and phloem.
  • Xylem transports water and dissolved minerals from the roots to the other parts of the plant.
  • Phloem transports food from the leaves to different parts of the plant.

Animal Tissue

  • Animal tissues are made up of different types of cells that perform different functions.
  • Observing animal tissues can be done using a permanent slide and a compound microscope.

Identify the types of plant tissues based on their cell walls and characteristics. This quiz covers Parenchyma, Collenchyma, and Sclerenchyma tissues.
