Plant Tissue Types
- Plants have three major tissue types: dermal, ground, and vascular.
- These tissues are found in all plant organs (leaves, stems, and roots).
Dermal Tissue
- Function: Protection and covering.
- Location: Outermost layer of herbaceous (non-woody) plants. Also known as epidermis.
- Root system function: Water and mineral uptake.
- Shoot system function: Gas exchange (oxygen and carbon dioxide).
- Leaves and stems function: Secretion of cuticle (waxy substance) to protect from microorganisms and prevent water loss.
Ground Tissue
- Function: Support, storage, and photosynthesis.
- Location: Beneath the epidermis in stems, roots, and leaves.
- Stem function: Provides structural support.
- Root function: Food and water storage.
- Leaf function: Site of photosynthesis, energy production.
Vascular Tissue
- Function: Transport of water, minerals, and sugars.
- Components: Xylem and phloem.
- Xylem:
- Function: Transports water and minerals from roots to shoots (upward movement).
- Structure: Hollow, dead cells (vessel elements) joined together with perforations.
- Phloem:
- Function: Transports dissolved sugars (products of photosynthesis) throughout the plant.
- Structure: Sieve tube cells with perforated end walls; supported by companion cells.
- Sugar use: Sugars are used for respiration(ATP production), cellulose synthesis for structure, or starch storage.
