Study Notes

Place Value and 3-Digit Numbers

  • This lesson focuses on forming, reading, and writing numbers up to 1000
  • Place value concepts, comparing 3-digit numbers, and ordering them are also taught.
  • Skip counting, ordinal numbers, and even/odd numbers rounds out this lesson
  • Applying number concepts to daily life scenarios is a key goal

Warm-up: Review of Prior Knowledge

  • Reading and writing numbers up to 100 is critical knowledge for this lesson
  • Understanding place value of digits
  • Comparing and ordering 2-digit numbers should be mastered

Place Value

  • Each digit in a number occupies a place or position and that position decides its value
  • This value is called the digit's place value
  • The face value of a digit is the digit itself without regard for its position.
  • All numbers utilize the digits 0-9 in their construction

Understanding 1-Digit Numbers

  • A single-digit number occupies only the ones place.
  • 7, for example, is in the ones place and thus its place value is 7.
  • The face value of 7 is 7.

Understanding 2-Digit Numbers

  • Numbers with two digits introduce the new place called the tens place
  • 46, is composed of 4 in the tens place and 6 in the ones place
  • The place value of 4 in 46 is 4 tens, or 40
  • The place value of 6 in 46 is 6 ones, or 6.
  • Expanded form: 46 = 4 tens + 6 ones = 40 + 6
  • Standard form: 46

Building 3-Digit Numbers (100)

  • 9 ones + 1 one = 10 ones = 1 ten
  • 9 tens + 1 ten = 10 tens = 1 hundred
  • The number 100 is written as "1 hundred"
  • 9 is the greatest 1-digit number
  • 10 is the smallest 2-digit number

Understanding 3-Digit Numbers

  • New place called hundreds place in introduced
  • 100 is written with a 1 in the hundreds place, 0 in the tens place, and 0 in the ones place.
  • Place value of 1 = 1 hundred = 100
  • Place value of right-most 0 = 0 ones = 0
  • Place value of middle 0 = 0 tens = 0

Representing 100 on an Abacus and Number Line

  • On a spike abacus there are spikes for the ones, the tens, and the hundreds
  • Moving right to left, the spikes represent ones, tens, and hundreds
  • On a number line, 100 follows 99

Numbers from 100 to 200

  • The quantity "10 ones" is equal to "1 ten."
  • When counting icons, 10 tens make up 100 icons
  • The word "hundred" derives from the Old Norse "hundrath" meaning 120

Counting Beyond 100

  • Beyond 100, numbers are are built on the hundreds place
  • 101 is one hundred and one
  • 162 is one hundred sixty-two
  • etc.

Place Value, Face Value, and Expanded Form of 3-Digit Numbers

  • Place value tells the value of a digit by its location in the number.
  • Face value is the digit itself
  • In the number 268: 8 is at the ones place so its place value is 8 ones = 8, 6 is at the tens place so its place value is 6 tens = 60, and 2 is at the hundreds place so its place value is 2 hundreds = 200
  • A digit can have different place values (3 has place values of 3 and 300 in the number 323)
  • Expanded form is the sum of the place values of its digits.

Expanded Form

  • Writing numbers as a sum of the place values of its digits = Expanded Form
  • Writing numbers using the face value of each digit with digits occupying correct place = short/standard form

Before, Between, and After

  • The predecessor of a number is the number that is 1 less than it
  • The successor of a number is the number that is 1 more than it
  • A number between two given numbers falls in the middle

Comparing 3-Digit Numbers

  • Numbers later a number sequence are larger than numbers earlier to it
  • 3-digit numbers are always greater than 2-digit numbers (e.g., 534 > 98).
  • To compare the hundreds place, look if a 3-digit number's hundreds digits are equivalent, then consider the tens.
  • To compare the tens place, look if a 3-digit number's hundreds and tens digits are equivalent, then consider the ones.

Ascending and Descending Orders

  • Ascending order means ordering from smallest to largest
  • Descending order means ordering from largest to smallest
  • Example: 168 < 250 < 525 < 900 represents the ascending order a set of numbers.

Forming Greatest and Smallest 3-Digit Numbers

  • To form the greatest number from a set, arrange the given digits in descending order
  • To form the smallest number from a set, arrange the given digits in ascending order.
  • "0" is not placed in the highest place when constructing 3-digit numbers, but it can be placed in the second-highest place

Skip Counting

  • Skip counting is counting with intervals between the numbers and is useful for arithmetic
  • Examples
    • Skip counting by 2s: 2, 4, 6, 8...
    • Skip counting by 5s: 5, 10, 15, 20...
    • Skip counting by 10s: 10, 20, 30, 40...

Even and Odd Numbers

  • Even numbers can be arranged in pairs
  • Odd numbers cannot be arranged in pairs
  • Even numbers have 0, 2, 4, 6, or 8 in the ones place.
  • Odd numbers have 1, 3, 5, 7, or 9 in the ones place.
  • Even or odd numbers occur in a sequence such that odd numbers follow even and vice versa

Ordinal Numbers

  • Those designating the position of something in a series are called ordinal numbers.
  • Examples
    • 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th
    • Eleventh
    • Twelfth
    • Twentieth
