    Study Notes

    PIM Reports

    • A Position and Intended Movement (PIM) report is a transmission from a lifeboat providing the current position and intended movements of a SAR Unit to a coordinating authority, normally the Coastguard.
    • The standard timing for PIM report for all ALB activity is 30 minutes.
    • PIM reports should be provided by voice communication and not by DSC or other non-voice methods.

    PIM Report Content

    • Include latitude and longitude or range and bearing from a known point of land (on a chart) for location.
    • If on a passage, state the lifeboats course speed and next major waypoints.
    • If on exercise state where you will intend to be within the next reporting window.
    • If the intentions are to remain in the same area, say so.
    • If communications are likely to be difficult for a period greater that the reporting windows allows, tell the coordinating authority.

    PIM Report Importance

    • PIM reports are essential for monitoring the safety of lifeboat crew.
    • PIM reports allow coordinating authorities to maintain visibility of assets within their area of operation.

    Alternative Reporting Procedures

    • When multiple lifeboats are working together or in proximity, one asset can report for the group.
    • If there is constant contact with the coordinating authority during SAR activities and the communication time period is less than the standard reporting period, the PIM can be left in abeyance.
    • A SITREP during a search will suffice, and a PIM report need only be sent after a period of 30 minutes (ALB) or 15 minutes (ILB) has elapsed with no other reported activity.
    • PIM reporting may be changed temporarily for individual assets by exception, with agreement between the vessel and the coordinating authority.
    • In rare circumstances, SAR units should risk assess and modify exercise plans in pursuit of safety.

    PIM Report Restrictions

    • PIM reports are not to be passed to the Boathouse or any non SAR unit unless directed by the controlling station.
    • Boathouses are not suitable reporting points for PIM reports due to radio coverage, licensing, and personnel requirements.

    PIM Report Review

    • The current agreement on communications procedures is under review with SAR partners.
    • This guidance reiterates the safety transmissions required by each SAR Unit whilst at sea.
    • The guidance was last reviewed on 10/06/2024 and will be reviewed again on 10/06/2025.
