Reproduction

Northern pike, for example, breed in the spring and are capable of breeding at an age of about two years. During spawning, female pike release a large number of eggs, which can be up to 100,000 per kilogram of body weight. The eggs will not hatch if the water temperature is below 6°C (43°F). Pike exhibits natal homing and spawning site fidelity, which allows for local adaptations and contributes to population structure and evolution.
