Study Notes
- After this lesson, one will be able to explain terms and concepts associated with Piaget's cognitive theory, discuss the stages of cognitive development, and identify teaching strategies that are supportive of Piaget's theory.
- Jean Piaget argued that cognitive development is influenced by biological maturation and interaction with the environment.
- Children go through similar stages of development, but the rate varies and some may miss later stages.
How Learning Occurs
- Piaget introduced schema, assimilation, and accommodation to explain cognitive development.
- Schemas are defined as "a cohesive, repeatable action sequence possessing component actions that are tightly interconnected and governed by a core meaning" (Piaget, 1952).
- Schemas are a way of organizing knowledge
- Schemata (plural) are like individual files representing aspects of the world like objects, actions, and concepts
- Schemata guide a person's way of responding to new experiences.
- Adaptation refers to the ability to adjust to new information or experiences, enabling coping with change; learning occurs if one can adapt.
- Jayden, a boy under 2, called his family dog Starbucks (a Shih Tzu) "dog".
- Upon seeing a poodle, he also called it "dog," however upon seeing his neighbors cat he also shouted dog to get his mothers attention.
- Jayden's schema for dogs includes a small furry body, four legs, a wagging tail, and barking.
- Calling the poodle "dog" is assimilation, taking new information into the existing schema.
- When his mother explains that dogs bark but cats meow, Jayden accommodated this new experience, creating a schema for "cats."
- Accommodation involves changing or altering existing schemas with new information.
- Equilibration is achieved through the balance between assimilation and accommodation.
