Study Notes
Inertia and Motion
- Inertia is the tendency of objects to resist changes in their motion.
- Acceleration is the rate of change of velocity with respect to time.
- Net force is the sum of all forces acting on an object.
- Friction is the resistance that one surface or object encounters when moving over another.
Laws of Motion
- 1st Law of Motion (Inertia): an object at rest will remain at rest, and an object in motion will stay in motion, unless acted upon by an external net force.
- 2nd Law of Motion (Acceleration): the acceleration of an object is directly proportional to the net force applied and inversely proportional to its mass.
- 3rd Law of Motion (Interaction): when two bodies interact, they apply forces to one another that are equal in magnitude and opposite in direction.
Physical and Chemical Changes
- Physical change: a change in appearance of matter without changing its chemical composition (e.g., freezing: change from liquid to solid).
- Chemical change: a change in matter that forms a new substance.
Energy and Speed
- Types of energy: kinetic energy (stored when an object is in motion) and potential energy (stored when an object is at rest).
- Kinetic energy is affected by mass and velocity.
- Speed of sound in air: 346 m/s at a certain temperature, decreasing with decreasing temperature.
- Speed of sound varies between cold and hot places, traveling faster in hot places and slower in cold places.
Electricity and Circuits
- Series circuit: a type of circuit that has two or more loads, but current flows through a single conducting loop.
- Parallel circuit: a type of circuit that has two or more paths for current to flow through.
Biology and Earth Sciences
- Small intestine: has the most important role in nutrient absorption.
- Kidney: organ responsible for excretion, where nitrogenous and metabolic wastes are expelled from the body.
- Mitosis: type of cell division where a single cell divides into two identical daughter cells.
- Meiosis: type of cell division where a single cell divides into four different daughter cells.
- Earthquake: a sudden shaking of the ground.
- Normal fault: the crust is being pulled apart, caused by tension stress.
Weather and Storms
- Typhoon: an intense circular storm that originates over warm tropical oceans.
- North West: the direction of typhoon in the Philippines.
- PAR (Philippine Area of Responsibility): the area monitored by meteorologists who study weather disturbances.
- Anemometer: an instrument used to measure wind speed.
- Eye: part of the typhoon with the lowest air pressure.
- Eyewall: part of the typhoon with extreme air pressure.
