Flashcards
Pascal's Law
Pascal's Law
A fundamental principle in fluid mechanics stating that pressure applied to an enclosed fluid is transmitted undiminished to every point within the fluid.
Floating Ice & Water Level
Floating Ice & Water Level
When a block of ice floating in a vessel melts, the water level remains the same because the ice displaces the same volume of water as its melted equivalent.
Ideal Fluid
Ideal Fluid
A theoretical fluid with no viscosity (no internal friction) and incompressibility (constant density).

Fluid Mechanics
Pressure in Fluids
- Pascal's law states that when a certain pressure is applied at any point in a fluid at rest, the pressure is equally transmitted in all directions and to every other point in the fluid.
Buoyancy and Flotation
- When a block of ice, floating over water in a vessel, slowly melts, the water level in the vessel will remain the same.
Ideal Fluid
- An ideal fluid is non-viscous and incompressible.
Pressure Measurement
- To find the absolute pressure in a vessel, the reading of the pressure gauge must be combined with the atmospheric pressure.
- Example: If the reading of the pressure gauge is 25 bars and the atmospheric pressure is 1.03 bar, the absolute pressure in the vessel is 26.03 bar.
Fluid Flow
- Existence of velocity potential implies that the flow is irrotational.
- Euler's equation of motion for the flow of an ideal fluid is derived considering the principle of conservation of momentum and the fluid as incompressible and inviscid.
