Study Notes
Rectilinear Propagation of Light
- Light travels in straight lines.
- This can be observed in shadow formation: when an object blocks light, a shadow is formed behind it.
Reflection of Light
- When light strikes a surface, it bounces back.
- This is called reflection.
- Smooth, shiny surfaces like mirrors reflect light regularly, producing a clear image.
- Irregular surfaces like rough walls reflect light in many directions, resulting in a diffused, blurry reflection.
Spherical Mirrors and Lenses
- Concave mirror: a mirror with a curved reflecting surface that is caved inward.
- Convex mirror: a mirror with a curved reflecting surface that is bulged outward.
- Concave lens: a lens that is thinner at its center and thicker at its edges.
- Convex lens: a lens that is thicker at its center and thinner at its edges.
Refraction of Light
- When light passes from one medium to another, it changes direction.
- This is called refraction.
- The change in direction is due to a change in the speed of light.
- Light travels slower in denser mediums like water than in air.
Dispersion of Light
- White light is actually made up of all the colors of the rainbow.
- When white light passes through a prism, it bends at different angles, separating the colors.
- This separation of colors is called dispersion.
