Study Notes
Types of Force
- Forces are pushes or pulls that can change the motion of an object.
- Examples include gravity, friction, normal force, tension, and applied force.
Balanced/Unbalanced Force
- Balanced forces are equal in size and opposite in direction, resulting in no change in motion (e.g., an object resting on a table).
- Unbalanced forces are unequal in size and/or direction, resulting in a change in motion (e.g., an object accelerating).
Making Free Body Diagrams
- Free body diagrams represent all forces acting on an object.
- Draw a dot representing the object.
- Draw arrows to represent each force with the arrow pointing in the direction of the force.
- Label each arrow with the type of force and its magnitude (size).
Distance/Displacement
- Distance is the total length of the path travelled.
- Displacement is the straight-line distance from the starting point to the ending point.
Speed/Velocity
- Speed is the rate of change of distance.
- Velocity is the rate of change of displacement, and includes direction.
Vector and Scalar Quantity
- Vector quantities have both magnitude (size) and direction (e.g., velocity, force).
- Scalar quantities have only magnitude (e.g., speed, distance).
Distance-Time Graph
- A distance-time graph plots distance against time.
- The slope of the line represents speed; a steeper slope means faster speed.
- A horizontal line indicates no motion.
Heat and Temperature
- Heat is the transfer of thermal energy between objects at different temperatures.
- Temperature measures the average kinetic energy of the particles in a substance.
Methods of Heat Transfer
- Conduction happens through direct contact.
- Convection happens through the movement of fluids (liquids or gases).
- Radiation travels through electromagnetic waves.
Innovations on Heat Energy Conversion to Electrical Energy
- Innovations focus on converting heat energy into electrical energy, often involving technological advancements like solar panels, fuel cells, or thermoelectric generators with efficiency improvements in various forms.
