Study Notes
Center of Mass Movement (CoM)
- Ignores rotation, focuses on rectilinear (1D) or curvilinear (2D or 3D) movement
Linear Motion
- Uniform motion of the system, with all parts moving in the same direction at the same speed
- Also known as translational motion
Displacement
- Measures the change of position of an object in space
- Displacement (S) = final position - initial position
- Angular displacement: the change in orientation of a line segment
Speed
- Measures the rate of change of displacement in a given time
- Same direction as displacement
- Units: meters/second (linear) or degrees/second (angular)
- Average speed = total displacement / total time
- Instant speed (v) = dS / dt
Acceleration
- Indicates the direction and rate of change of speed
- Units: m/s2 or °/s2
Angular Movement
- Rotation about a central imaginary line known as the axis of rotation
- Almost all voluntary human movement involves the rotation of a segment of the body about an imaginary axis of rotation
Relationship between Angular and Linear Displacement
- Considering the same movement time, different points have different linear and angular velocities
Kinetics
- Study of the forces associated with movement
- Newton's laws of motion:
- First law: law of inertia
- Second law: law of momentum
- Third law: law of action-reaction
General Motion
- Combination of translation and rotation
- Examples: soccer ball kicked from field to field, runner translating along the angular movements of the body segments
Quantitative vs. Qualitative Analysis
- Qualitative: description of quality without the use of numbers
- Quantitative: use of numbers to analyze human movement
- Biomechanics: science that studies the mechanical aspects of living organisms
Biomechanics
- Definition: combines the prefix bio with the field of mechanics that studies the actions of forces
- Studies the mechanical aspects of living organisms, including the human body
- Includes the analysis of internal forces generated by muscles and external forces affecting the body
Kinematics
- Branch of mechanics that describes the motion of a body without regard to the forces or torques that produce the motion
- Analysis of the trajectory of a body over time
- Concepts:
- Body position at a given time
- Displacement
- Time
- Speed
- Acceleration
