Study Notes
Light – Reflection and Refraction
- Objects become visible when light reflects off their surface and enters our eyes.
- Light travels in straight lines, which is evident from how small light sources cast sharp shadows.
- Diffraction occurs when light bends around a very small object, indicating that the straight-line model of light has its limits.
- Light exhibits dual characteristics; it behaves as a wave and as a stream of particles, depending on the context.
- Quantum theory reconciles the wave and particle nature of light, explaining its interactions with matter.
- This chapter focuses on the phenomena of reflection and refraction, crucial for understanding optical events in nature.
Reflection of Light
- Highly polished surfaces, like mirrors, reflect most of the incident light.
- Two key laws of reflection:
- The angle of incidence equals the angle of reflection.
- The incident ray, the normal at the point of incidence, and the reflected ray are all in the same plane.
- In plane mirrors, images formed are:
- Always virtual and erect.
- The same size as the object being reflected.
- Located at the same distance behind the mirror as the object is in front, with lateral inversion.
Curved Mirrors
- Curved surfaces, such as those of spoons, can form images that differ in size and characteristics compared to plane mirrors.
- Activities can be performed using a shining spoon to observe changes in image size and quality as the spoon is moved, demonstrating the properties of images with spherical surfaces.
