Study Notes

Lesson 1: Introduction

  • Physical education is the education of, by, and through human movement
  • It's an integral part of total education, aiming to develop physically, mentally, socially, psychologically, emotionally, and spiritually fit citizens through various physical activities.
  • The goal is to develop the body, shape character, discipline the mind through movements.
  • Modern emphasis is on physical education's educational potential, contributing to physical fitness, physical skills, and desirable qualities.
  • It includes movement exploration, creative thought, problem-solving, concept formation, and concomitant learning, fostering a positive self-concept and confident self-image.

Physical Fitness and its Components

  • Physical fitness is the ability to do daily tasks without exhaustion and to enjoy recreation.
  • It represents the capability of the body's systems to perform daily activities efficiently and still have energy for unforeseen events.
  • It's a condition where body systems work at optimal efficiency.
  • Components of physical fitness are categorized as health-related or skill-related.
  • It's the body's adaptation to exercise, developed and maintained through regular exercise.
  • Five components:
    • Cardio-respiratory endurance: Heart, blood vessels, and lungs efficiently deliver oxygen to working muscles and remove waste. Characterized by the body's ability to sustain oxygen intake for demanding physical tasks.
    • Muscular strength: Maximum force a muscle or muscle group can exert against resistance. Allows overcoming resistance through muscular exertion.
    • Muscular endurance: Ability of a muscle or group to contract repeatedly against a resistance for prolonged periods.
    • Flexibility: Range of motion in joints.
    • Body composition: Ratio of fat to lean body tissue (muscle, bone, blood, skin, organs). Optimal male body composition is less than 15% body fat.
  • Necessary for demonstrating motor skills and movement patterns.
  • Components:
    • Speed: Successive movements of the same kind in the shortest time. Influenced by reaction time (time elapsed from the signal to the first response).
    • Power: Release maximum force in the shortest time, a product of strength and speed.
    • Agility: Change direction and positions quickly.
    • Balance: Control organic equipment neuro-muscularly; Equilibrium state (static, dynamic, rotational).
    • Coordination: Harmonious functioning of muscles in complex movements.
    • Reaction time: Time between a stimulus and the start of a response.

Wellness

  • Wellness is the integration of social, emotional, mental, spiritual, and physical components of human potential.
  • Emphasizes quality of life and productivity, influencing positive contributions to society.
  • Seven dimensions of wellness: Physical, social, emotional, spiritual, intellectual, occupational, existential, and financial.

Stages of Behavior Modification

  • Precontemplation (unaware of the problem)
  • Contemplation (aware of the problem and desired change)
  • Preparation (intends to take action)
  • Action (practices the desired behavior)
  • Maintenance (sustains the behavior change)
