Study Notes
Phylum Cnidaria
- Belong to the oldest animal groups on Earth
- Diploblastic, with two germ layers: endoderm and ectoderm
- Jelly-like mesoglea between these layers
- Radial symmetry
- Aquatic, mostly marine
- Tissue-level organization; cells create tissues
- Gastrovascular cavity, with a single opening (mouth/anus)
- Tentacles surrounding the mouth region, with stinging cells (nematocysts)
- Can sting humans, sometimes causing a painful wound
- Breathing through the whole surface of the body
- Nerve net nervous system
- Two forms: polyp (sessile) and medusa (free-swimming)
- Alternation of generations (polyp and medusa stages)
Hydrozoa
- Polyps with a brief medusa stage
- Huge regenerative capacity
- Filter feeders (feed on plankton)
- Some have a velum (circular shelf)
- Examples: hydra, freshwater jellyfish (Craspedacusta sowerbyi)
Cubozoa
- Cube-shaped medusa
- Long tentacles
- Very dangerous venom, potentially fatal to humans
- Tropical ocean dwellers
Scyphozoa
- Primarily medusa-form
- Have a brief polyp stage
- Sexual reproduction (planula and strobilation)
- Ocelli (light-sensitive organs)
- Example: Common jellyfish (Aurelia aurita)
Anthozoa
- No medusa stage
- Sexual and asexual reproduction (budding)
- Internal skeleton of needles (mesoglea)
- External skeletons that form coral reefs and atolls
- Examples: stony corals, brain coral, sea anemones, red coral
