Study Notes

Phraseology

  • Phraseology is a branch of linguistics that studies different types of set expressions, which function like words in naming various objects and phenomena.
  • Set expressions exist in the language as ready-made units.

Phraseological Units (PU)

  • A PU is an unmotivated word grouping that cannot be freely assembled during speech but is instead reproduced as a pre-formed entity.
  • A PU comprises words whose collective meaning cannot be inferred solely from the meanings of its constituent lexemes.
  • Essential features of PU:
    • Lack of motivation
    • Stability in the lexical components

Classification of Phraseological Units

  • Phraseological units can be classified into three groups based on the degree of idiomaticity:
    • Phraseological fusions
    • Phraseological unities
    • Phraseological collocations

Phraseological Fusions

  • Completely non-motivated word groups
  • Represent the highest degree of blending together
  • Cannot be understood without using a dictionary

Phraseological Unities

  • Partially non-motivated
  • Meaning can usually be understood through the metaphoric meaning of the whole phraseologisms
  • More numerous in the English language

Phraseological Collocations

  • Motivated word groups
  • Composed of words possessing specific lexical valency
  • Accountability for a certain degree of stability in such word-groups
  • Variability of member words is strictly limited

Test your knowledge of phraseology, a branch of linguistics that studies set expressions and phraseological units. Learn about the essential features of PUs, including lack of motivation and non-compositionality.
