Phrasal Verbs in Current Use
- Account for: To explain the reason for something, or to answer for something. Example: "I can't account for his unusual behavior."
- Ask after: To inquire about someone's welfare. Example: "I met your brother, he asked after you."
- Ask for: To request something. Example: "She asked for a glass of water."
- Back out: To withdraw from a promise or agreement. Example: "He agreed to help but backed out at the last moment."
- Be in for: To be about to experience something unpleasant. Example: "On account of his bad habits, he is in for trouble."
- Bear away: To win, especially a prize or contest. Example: "Suhani bore away the first prize."
- Bear on/upon: To have relevance to. Example: "Your remarks have no bearing on the main problem."
- Bear out: To support (an argument or statement). Example: "I am sure my classmates will bear out my statement."
- Bear with: To be patient with someone. Example: "In view of the losses, the company asked the shareholders to bear with them."
- Blow out: To extinguish (a flame or candle). Example: "The candle blew out as the gust of wind came in."
- Blow over: To pass off without causing lasting problems. Example: "Don't worry, the crisis is likely to blow over."
- Blow up: To explode, or to start (something) suddenly. Example: "The plan to blow up the flyover was foiled."
- Break down: To collapse emotionally, or to stop functioning. Example: "She broke down while giving evidence in court."
- Break into: To enter a building by force. Example: "The robbers broke into his house."
- Break off: To end a discussion or negotiation unsuccessfully. Example: "The talks between India and China broke off."
- Break out: To spread quickly (war, disease, fire). Example: "The fear that AIDS has broken out in India is not unfounded."
- Break through: To achieve a significant breakthrough, an important discovery. Example: "There is no hope of break through in the murder case."
- Break up: To end a relationship, or a meeting. Example: "The college will break up next week for summer vacation."
- Break up with: To end a relationship. Example: "After long friendship the two friends broke up with each other"
- Break open: To open something by force. Example: "The thief broke open the lock and stole the money."
- Bring about: To cause something to happen. Example: "The administration helped to bring about a peaceful settlement."
- Bring out: To reveal the meaning of something or to publish something. Example: "She could not bring out the meaning of the poem."
- Bring round: To convince someone to agree. Example: "I was able to bring my mother round to my views."
- Bring up: To raise children. Example: "Fathers are beginning to play a bigger role in bringing up their children."
- Call at: To visit a place. Example: "I called at the residence of my boss yesterday."
- Call for: To demand. Example: "For the unity of the country discipline among the people is called for."
- Call in/call out: To call for help or to summon. Example: "The police were called in" or "The National Guards have been called out"
- Call off: To cancel something. Example: "We decided to call off the strike."
- Call on: To visit someone. Example: "It is a tradition for the Prime Minister to call on the President."
- Call out: To ask for help. Example: "The National Guards has been called out"
- Call up: To make a phone call. Example: "Many of my friends called me up"
- Call upon: To ask someone to do something. Example: "He was called upon to prove the correctness of the press reports."
- Carry away by: To be overcome with emotion. Example: "On hearing the news, he was carried away by joy."
- Carry on: To continue. Example: "Now it is difficult to carry on this business."
- Carry out: To implement or execute something. Example: "It is not likely that your father will carry out..."
- Cast away: To discard something. Example: "We usually give our servants the old clothes which we cast away."
- Cast down: To be dejected or disheartened. Example: "Now-a-days he is cast down as a result of...”
- Cast off: To shed or remove. Example: "Organization must cast off old fashioned practices."
- Catch up with: To do something or someone later. Example: "He remained ill for many days, but caught up with the pending work soon."
- Come about: To happen. Example: "It is not good that such an unfortunate accident came about."
- Come across: To meet or find something by chance. Example: "I came across my old friend"
