    Light Absorption Phase

RuBisCo catalyzes the addition of CO₂, allowing it to combine with five ribulose bisphosphate units, forming an unstable six-carbon product called 3-phosphoglycerate. Alternatively, some plants, such as crassulacean acid metabolism (CAM) plants, open pores primarily at night to reduce photorespiration rates.
