Study Notes
Photosynthesis
- Process where plants use sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide to create oxygen and glucose (sugar) for energy.
- Chemical equation: 6CO2 + 6H2O → C6H12O6 + 6O2
- Occurs in chloroplasts, which contain chlorophyll.
- Chlorophyll absorbs sunlight, giving plants their green color.
Cellular Respiration
- Process in cells where organic molecules are broken down using oxygen to release energy (ATP).
- Chemical equation: C6H12O6 + 6O2 → 6CO2 + 6H2O + ATP
- Occurs in mitochondria, which is known as the "powerhouse of the cell".
Anaerobic Respiration
- Process where cells break down sugars for energy without oxygen.
- Examples: Lactic acid fermentation, alcoholic fermentation.
ATP
- Cellular energy source.
- Composed of a nitrogenous base, a ribose sugar, and a phosphate group.
Lactic Acid Fermentation
- Type of anaerobic respiration in muscle cells.
- Produces ATP from sugar breakdown.
- Causes muscle pain.
Alcoholic Fermentation
- Anaerobic respiration where yeast, bacteria, etc. convert sugars into carbon dioxide and alcohol.
Photosynthesis
- Plants use sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide to produce oxygen and energy in the form of sugar (glucose)
- The chemical equation for photosynthesis is: 6CO2 + 6H2O → C6H12O6 + 6O2
Cellular Respiration
- Organic molecules are broken down using oxygen to release energy (ATP)
- The chemical equation for cellular respiration is: C6H12O6 + 6O2 → 6CO2 + 6H2O + ATP
Anaerobic Respiration
- Cells break down sugars for energy without the use of oxygen
- Examples of anaerobic respiration include Lactic Acid Fermentation and Alcoholic Fermentation
Aerobic Respiration
- Oxygen is used to make sugars
ATP
- The source of energy for use and storage at the cellular level
- Contains a nitrogenous base, a ribose sugar, and a phosphate group
Lactic Acid Fermentation
- A type of anaerobic respiration that occurs in muscle cells
- Breaks down sugars to produce ATP
- Often leads to muscle pain
Alcoholic Fermentation
- A type of anaerobic respiration that is used to convert sugars into carbon dioxide and alcohol
- Occurs in yeast, bacteria, and other organisms
Mitochondria
- Membrane-bound organelle that generates most of the energy needed for processes such as cellular respiration
- Known as the “powerhouse of the cell”
Chloroplast
- Membrane-bound organelle that captures the sun’s energy to produce food for energy in plant cells
- Photosynthesis occurs in the chloroplast
Chlorophyll
- A pigment located inside of chloroplasts
- Gives plants their green color
- Captures the sunlight needed to perform photosynthesis
