Mark Scheme
- Students describe what they see.
- Responses are assessed for content & communication (6 marks) and language (3 marks).
- Word count is between 30-50 words.
- Band 1 (1-2 marks) responses contain some relevant words and/or phrases.
- Band 2 (3-4 marks) are mostly relevant with some delay in communication.
- Band 3 (5-6 marks) are relevant, detailed and clear.
Vocabulary
- Adjectives can enhance description of places e.g. cosmopolitan, thriving, accessible, stunning, vibrant, quaint, bustling
- Use terms that describe places in Africa such as: traditional, modern, bustling, busy, wild, open, luxurious, decrepit
- Other descriptive terms include: prodigious, aesthetic, lush, congested, alluring, pageantry, angelic, idyllic, unspoilt, picturesque, and enamour.
- Phrases include: Rolling hills in distance, Low hills with gentle slopes and Bleak wintry landscape.
- List of colors like lavender, amethyst, indigo, pansy, mauve, plum, grape, lilac, iris, etc, sapphire, aqua, delft, apple, lime, canary, topaz, brass, sulfur, sunburst
- Location words and phrases such as at the top, in the top left-hand corner, in the background and in the middle.
- To gain a maximum score, ensure relevant detail and employ clear communication within a framework of accurate spelling and punctuation using simple, straight vocabulary.
- Select key points and divide the picture into parts.
