Order of Draw

  • Blood Culture tube must be drawn first, using sterile technique, and then discarded.
  • Light Blue tube is used for Coagulation Studies, containing Sodium Citrate, and must be inverted 3-4 times.
  • Red tube is used for Chemistry, with no anticoagulant (glass) or Silicon coating (plastic), and must not be inverted (glass) or inverted 5 times (plastic).
  • Red/Gray tube is used for Chemistry, containing Clot activator and gel separator, and must be inverted 5 times.
  • Gold (SST) tube is used for Chemistry, containing Gel separator and clot activator, and must be inverted 5 times.
  • Green tube is used for Chemistry, containing Heparin, and must be inverted 8 times.
  • Lavender tube is used for Hematology and hemoglobin A1c, containing EDTA, and must be inverted 8 times.
  • Gray tube is used for Blood alcohol and Glucose, containing Potassium oxalate and Sodium fluoride, and must be inverted 8-10 times.
  • Gray tube must not be used after cleansing the site with alcohol.
