The Self from Various Philosophical Perspectives
- Socrates - the first philosopher to systematically explore the self, believed that the true self is the soul, not the physical body.
- Plato - Socrates' student, agreed with the dual nature of body and soul and added three components to the soul: rational, spirited, and appetitive.
- Aristotle - Plato's student, believed that the essence of the self, "ideal", is found within tangible phenomena, or "matter."
- Augustine - supported the idea of a bifurcated nature, where the body is earthly and the soul lives eternally in a spiritual realm with God.
- Thomas Aquinas - agreed that the self is composed of two parts: matter and form. Matter is the physical body, while form is the soul.
- Rene Descartes - a rationalist, supported the idea of a body and mind, with the mind as the key element that defines a person.
- David Hume - an empiricist, believed that the self is not an entity beyond the physical body, but rather a collection of perceptions constantly changing.
- Immanuel Kant - also an empiricist, believed in an organizing principle within the mind that structures the perception of the world. He proposed ideas of time and space as inherent in the mind.
- Gilbert Ryle - refuted the concept of a non-physical self, believing that behavior is the key indicator of a person's identity.
- Merleau-Ponty - proposed that the mind and body are inextricably linked, with all experiences being embodied.
