- Legal definition - irreversible cessation of circulatory and respiratory functions or irreversible cessation of all functions of the entire brain including the brain stem

- When respiratory and cardiac functions cease and attempts at resuscitation would not be successful

Different Philosophers' Views on Death
- Socrates' view: Death is either a dreamless sleep or a passage to another life, and therefore is not something to fear.
- Epicurus' view: Death is the end of all sensation and consciousness, and therefore does not feel like anything. He argues that fearing nonexistence gets in the way of enjoying life.
- Thomas Nagel's view: Death is a misfortune only because of what it deprives us of - specifically future experiences. He argues that premature death is worse since it deprives us more. He views the "fear of missing out" as the fundamental fear of death.
Death as a catalyst for meaning in life
- The inevitability of death highlights the preciousness and value of life.
- A limited time frame for human existence creates a sense of urgency to live life to the fullest.
- Death gives meaning to life because it reminds us that life is a gift and should be cherished.
