Post and Lintel

  • Consists of a horizontal beam (lintel) and two vertical posts to support it.
  • Often found in doors and entrances.
  • The prehistoric "Stonehenge" illustrates this type of architectural construction.

Cantilever

  • Similar to post and lintel, but with a horizontal beam extending further on one end.
  • Steel is often used due to its tensile strength, while wood is used less frequently due to its tendency to warp, sag, and rot.

Arch

  • Consists of wedge-shaped blocks of stone (voussoirs) held together by a key stone.
  • Supports structures such as roofs and is often used as a symbolic gateway.
  • The Arch of Triumph in Paris, France, is an example of this type of architectural construction introduced by the Romans.

Dome

  • A large hemispherical roof or ceiling resembling an inverted cup.
