Phases of Social Case Work Process
- There are three phases of social case work process: Intake and Psycho-Social Study, Social Diagnosis, and Treatment and Termination.
Intake and Psycho-Social Study
- Intake is an administrative procedure that involves taking in a person with a problem and admitting them as a client of the agency.
- The goal of intake is to assess the needs and problems of the applicant and determine how and where their needs can be best met.
- Social investigation is a psycho-social process that involves gaining an understanding of the kind of help the client needs.
- The social worker must understand the client's perspective on their problem, what they think can be done about it, and what they have tried to do about it.
- Perlman has identified six contents of the case work study in the beginning phase:
- The nature of the problem
- The significance of the problem
- The causes of the problem
- The efforts made to cope with problem solving
- The nature of the solutions or ends sought from the case work agency
- The actual nature of the agency and its problem-solving means in relation to the client and their problems
Tools and Techniques in the Beginning Phase
- Interview
- Objective observation
- Examination of records and documents
- Collection of information from collateral and family sources
- Special examination of tests
Social Diagnosis (Assessment)
- Social diagnosis is an explanation formulated in the light of known facts, based on the study of the problem in its past, present, and future setting.
- The content of the case work diagnosis falls into a triangular pattern, consisting of:
- The nature of the problem brought and the goals set by the client
- The nature of the person who bears the problem (their social and psychological situation and functioning)
- The nature and purpose of the agency and the kind of help it can offer
Types of Diagnosis
- Perlman has described three types of diagnosis:
- Dynamic Diagnostic: Gives an understanding of the current problem of the client and forces currently operating within the client, within the social environment, and between the client and their environment.
- Clinical Diagnosis: Involves classifying the client by the nature of their problem, identifying forms and qualities of client personality maladaptation and malfunctioning in their behavior.
- Etiological Diagnosis: Concerned with the explanation of the beginning of the life history of the client's problems, particularly those that lie in the client's personality makeup or functioning.
