Study Notes
Pharynx Anatomy
- Part of the pharynx located behind the larynx
- Connected to the larynx through the laryngeal inlet
- Inferior constrictor muscle has a superior portion (thyropharyngeus) located opposite the thyroid cartilage
- Inferior constrictor muscle has an inferior portion (cricopharyngeus) located opposite the cricoid cartilage; this section prevents air from entering the esophagus during swallowing
Pharynx Blood Supply
- Supplied by the ascending pharyngeal artery (branch of external carotid artery)
- Supplied by ascending palatine artery (branch of facial artery)
- Supplied by tonsillar artery (branch of facial artery)
- Supplied by a pharyngeal branch of the maxillary artery
Pharynx Venous Drainage
- Veins of the pharynx converge to form the pharyngeal plexus of veins
- Pharyngeal plexus drains into the internal jugular vein
