Legal Principles in Pharmacy Practice

Legal principles governing pharmacy practice can be divided into three categories: Statutes, Regulatory Law, and Common Law
Statutes are laws passed by legislative bodies that dictate the activities of individuals subject to the law
Regulatory Law is promulgated by government agencies for the enforcement and understanding of the law
Common Law encompasses areas of law that have evolved over hundreds of years of judicial decision

Objectives of Ethics in Pharmacy Practice

To make clear why one act is better than another
To live an orderly social life
To appraise and criticize intelligently the moral conduct and ethical system
To seek the value of life

Ethics and Bioethics

Professional Ethics is a branch of moral science that treats of the obligations owed to the public, profession, and clients
Bioethics is the application of ethics to biological sciences, medicine, and related fields
Bioethics is a systemic study of moral conduct in life sciences and medicine
Importance of Bioethics: provides awareness to healthcare workers of the "do's and don'ts" of medical practice and enriches one's competence by understanding patients as holistic individuals

Republic Acts (RA) in the Philippines

Hospitals and Healthcare

RA 4226: Hospital Licensure Act, requires licensure of all hospitals in the Philippines
RA 10644: prohibits demand of deposits or advance payments for confinement or treatment of patients in hospitals and medical clinics in certain cases

Public Health

RA 9211: Tobacco Regulation Act of 2003, regulates packaging, use, sale, distribution, and advertisements of tobacco products
RA 10643: Graphics Health Warnings Law, requires graphic health warnings on tobacco products
RA 8172: Asin Law, promotes salt iodization nationwide

Traditional and Alternative Medicine
