Getting Started

  • Contact both Principal and Second Supervisors early
  • If there is no Second Supervisor, ask your first supervisor to appoint one or contact the PGR Administrators at [email protected]
  • Enrol in the 'PGR Information JWSE' page on Moodle, using the enrolment code "goodwork"
  • All guidance documents are saved on the Moodle page
  • Familiarise yourself with the PGR Code of Practice
  • Contact the School PGR Administrators for administrative questions

PhD School Funds

  • PhD students can request a standard School Laptop at the start of their studies
  • Laptops are for the entire PhD, and requesting one early in year 1 is encouraged
  • Students with research support costs via a research project can use those funds for a laptop
  • Students without external research support funds can get up to £1,500 for conference attendance/research visits
  • Approval must be granted in advance of incurring any cost
  • If a student does not request a School laptop, they may be allocated an increased travel allowance subject to availability of funds

Requesting a Laptop

  • School laptops can be requested by completing the Teams Form: https://forms.office.com/e/NPz58hE0Zj
  • The lead time from requesting to receiving a laptop is approximately 3 weeks
  • Once configured and ready for collection, you will receive an email from an IT staff member with a 30-minute collection slot
  • The collection point is the Tech Bar in the James Watt North building

Researcher Training Courses

  • There are 4 Moodle based mandatory courses to complete in year 1

  • Students in the School of Engineering do not need to complete the 'Introduction to GDPR' course
  • All Researcher Development training will be booked through a system called ‘Inkpath'

  • Mandatory courses are in the 'Self Study' section where there is a link to the relevant Moodle page

Annual Progression Review (APR)

  • PGR students undertake an Annual Progression Review (APR) in years 1 to 3
  • Within the School of Engineering there are two APRs scheduled each year in Spring and Autumn
  • PhD start date of 1 May - 30 November has an APR schedule of Spring
  • PhD start date of 1 December - 30 April has an APR schedule of Autumn
  • The APR submission deadline and review meeting dates will be emailed and posted on Moodle around 3 months before your submission deadline
  • The APR meetings are held over a 2-or 3-week period in June or October each year

Annual Leave

  • PGR students are entitled to 8 weeks annual leave including public holidays
  • Contact your supervisor for approval with as much notice as possible, and record the approved leave dates in your Student Centre on Mycampus
  • International students on a Tier 4/Student visa should also send a confirmatory email with the agreed dates to the PGR Administrator at [email protected]
