Pet Microchip Program
- Spring Fire Department offers a community service: scanning pet microchips.
- Service is available from 7:00 AM to 9:00 PM, or per company officer's discretion.
- Fire personnel must read the instruction manual before using the Pet Microchip Reader.
- Pet Microchip Readers should be charged and checked every shift.
- Animals arriving must be leashed or in a carrier.
- Scanning should occur outside by the rescuer’s vehicle or in the station's foyer.
- Photos of each scanned animal are to be taken.
- If a microchip number is found, use the AAHA microchip search page to locate the manufacturer's toll-free number.
- If an animal is not registered or the information is outdated, fill out a lost animal form.
- Lost animals cannot stay at the stations.
- If an animal appears injured or is in distress, contact the SPCA for an animal ambulance.
- The lost animal form is accessible through the second QR code.
- Lost animal forms are immediately sent to the Communications and Outreach team.
Program Policy
- The purpose of this policy is to provide procedures for using Pet Microchip Readers and documenting lost animals brought to Spring Fire Stations.
- The policy applies to all fire department personnel involved in station-level operations, communication, and outreach.
Lost Animal Procedures
- Follow the manufacturer's instructions for scanning the Pet Microchip Reader.
- If a microchip number is found, the manufacturer's toll-free number can be found through the AAHA microchip search page.
- Spring Fire personnel will help the rescuer call the microchip manufacturer's toll-free number to get registry information.
- If an animal is not registered or the information is outdated, fill out the "lost animal form."
- If no microchip number is found, enter a "0" in the microchip number field and submit the lost animal form.
- Lost animals leave the fire station with the rescuer, and animals may not stay at the stations.
- The Spring Fire Department maintains a database of lost animals brought to fire stations.
- Lost animal forms and photos are sent to the Communications and Outreach team.
SPCA Contact
- If an animal appears injured, unable to eat or drink, or displays distress from an injury, contact the SPCA for an animal ambulance at 713-880-HELP (4357).
- For routine contact on the program or foster help, reach out to the Public Information Officer.
