Study Notes
Group 1 Elements (Alkali Metals)
- Have a valence shell of 1 electron
- Are soft and reactive metals
- Increase in density and decrease in melting point as you move down the group
Group 7 Elements (Halogens)
- Have 7 electrons in their valence shell
- Are reactive non-metals that form diatomic molecules (share 1 pair of electrons)
- Gain 1 electron to form a stable full outer shell
- Decrease in reactivity as you move down the group
- Increase in boiling point as you move down the group
- Change in appearance:
- Chlorine: Pale yellow gas
- Bromine: Red-brown liquid
- Iodine: Grey-Black solid
Group 8 Elements (Noble Gases)
- Have a full outer shell, making them unreactive and unable to form bonds
- Exist as monatomic gases
Transition Metals
- Are hard metals with high melting points
- Lose variable numbers of electrons (e.g., Fe2+ and Fe2r)
- Often act as catalysts
- Form colored compounds in solution
