Understanding COVID-19 Transmission
Transmission of the virus that causes COVID-19 can occur through various routes, including respiratory droplets from coughing, sneezing, or talking; contact with contaminated surfaces; and airborne transmission. Here's what you need to know about how this coronavirus spreads:
Respiratory Droplet Transmission
When someone infected with the virus talks, coughs, or sneezes, they expel small liquid particles called respiratory droplets into the air around them. These droplets can contain millions of viral particles if the person is actively shedding the virus. If another individual comes within close range—usually about six feet—they may breathe in these droplets and become infected themselves. This mode of transmission was initially thought to dominate the early stages of the pandemic but has since been found to play less of a role.
Fomite Transmission
Fomites refer to any surface or object that carries infectious pathogens. In the context of COVID-19, touching a contaminated fomite like a doorknob or table and subsequently touching your mouth, nose, or eyes could lead to infection. However, while it's possible, direct transmission via fomite surfaces appears relatively rare.
Airborne Transmission
As the understanding of SARS-CoV-2 and its ability to linger in the air has evolved, experts have come to recognize that some transmission occurs through minuscule airborne droplets known as aerosols. A study published in Nature Medicine reported that near-patient rooms, up to three hours after patient discharge, had detectable levels of viable virus. These findings suggest that even when patients present no symptoms, they can still shed large amounts of virus. Additionally, the CDC now acknowledges that in certain environments, such as poorly ventilated spaces where people spend extended periods of time together, COVID-19 might spread more easily between individuals who don't share household space.
Super-Spreading Events
Super-spreader events, also referred to as superspreading, involve a single individual transmitting the virus to many others. While super-spreaders only account for a tiny fraction of cases, their impact on public health cannot be overstated due to the sheer number of new infections caused by one event.
Therefore, it's crucial to understand all modes of transmission—from direct interactions with infected individuals to indirect exposure through fomites and potential airborne contamination—in order to reduce the risk of acquiring COVID-19. Adopting preventive measures such as wearing masks, practicing good hand hygiene, avoiding crowded indoor spaces, and staying home when unwell remains key to stopping the spread of the virus.
