Study Notes

Iron Deficiency Anemia

  • Anemia is defined as a reduction of hemoglobin concentration below normal values for age and sex.
  • Iron is the main substrate for hemoglobin synthesis in bone marrow.
  • Iron deficiency is the most common nutritional deficiency, affecting 30% of the world's population, and Fe deficiency anemia is the most common type of anemia.

Prevention of Iron Deficiency

  • Breast milk is relatively deficient in iron, and animal milk is a very poor source of iron.
  • Baby stores of iron, derived from the mother, are depleted before the age of 4-6 months.
  • Babies need iron supplementation from the age of 6 months onwards, at a rate of 1mg elemental Fe/kg/day.

Importance of Iron in Hemoglobin

  • Iron is an essential part of hemoglobin, and is necessary for hemoglobin synthesis in bone marrow.

Causes of Fe Deficiency Anemia

  • Reduced intake of iron
  • Malabsorption of iron
  • Increased demand for iron
  • Blood loss

High-Risk Group

  • Children under 3 years of age who take a large amount of unfortified animal milk daily are at risk of iron deficiency
