Flashcards

Pectoralis Major Function

Adducts, medially rotates, and flexes the arm; helps with climbing and forced inspiration.

Pectoralis Minor Action

Draws scapula anteroinferiorly and depresses the shoulder; assists in forced inspiration.

Subclavius Function

Stabilizes the clavicle.

Serratus Anterior Action

Protracts scapula (pushing/boxing), abducts arm >90 degrees.

Study Notes

Pectoral Region Muscles

  • Pectoralis Major:

    • Origin (Clavicular Head): Anterior surface of medial part of clavicle
    • Origin (Sternocostal Head): Sternum, upper 6 costal ribs
    • Insertion: Lateral lip of the bicipital groove of humerus
    • Nerve Supply: Medial and lateral pectoral nerves
    • Action: Adduction of the arm, medial rotation of arm, climbing, forced inspiration, flexion of the shoulder
  • Pectoralis Minor:

    • Origin: 3rd, 4th, 5th ribs
    • Insertion: Coracoid process of scapula
    • Nerve Supply: Medial pectoral nerve
    • Action: Draws the scapula anteroinferiorly, depression of the shoulder, forced inspiration
  • Subclavius:

    • Origin: Junction between 1st rib and its cartilage
    • Insertion: Subclavian groove of clavicle
    • Nerve Supply: Nerve to subclavius
    • Action: Stabilizes the clavicle
  • Serratus Anterior:

    • Origin: Originates from fleshy digitations from the outer surface of first 8 ribs
    • Insertion: Ventral surface of medial border of scapula
    • Nerve Supply: Nerve to serratus (Long thoracic)
    • Action: Protraction of scapula, used in boxing & pushing, abduction of arm >90, used in punishment
