Parts of Speech
Understanding parts of speech is crucial for grammar and writing effectively. Here's a brief overview of each part of speech:
Nouns
Nouns are words that represent people, places, things, or ideas. They can function as the subject or object of a sentence, as well as the complement of a linking verb. Examples of common nouns include: cat, dog, boy, girl, man, woman, family, house, car, book, computer, day, night. Nouns can also indicate classifications or categories of people, places, things, or ideas, called collective nouns. For example: group, herd, audience, team, committee, family, school, society, crowd, choir, flock.
Verbs
Verbs are action words. They describe actions or states of being. The most basic type of verb is the predicate verb—the verb in a sentence that expresses what the subject is doing or what is happening to it. For example: She walks the dog, He sings loudly, They run fast, We swim every morning.
Adjectives
Adjectives modify or describe nouns or pronouns. A word used to describe any other word in a sentence; an adjective usually tells us more about a noun or pronoun by giving information about its quantity, quality, shape, color, size, etc.. Examples of common adjectives include: big, small, red, blue, happy, sad, ugly, pretty, tall, short.
Adverbs
Adverbs are words that describe or give more information about how, when, where, why, or to what extent something else happens. For example: quickly, slowly, correctly, incorrectly, completely, partially.
Pronouns
Pronouns take the place of a noun or noun phrase. They can be used to form a sentence without using the name of the person or thing you are talking about. Examples include: I, me, he, him, she, herself, we, they, them, our, their, yours.
