In phrases like "the city of New York" and "John's happiness," the first noun is modified by an article and a prepositional phrase, respectively. The second is used as a subject complement.

• Verbs: A verb is a word used to express action or a state of being. For example, "run," "walk," and "eat" are all verbs. Verbs can also be used to describe a state or condition, such as "is," "was," or "were."

• Adjectives: An adjective is a word used to describe or modify a noun or pronoun. For example, "beautiful" in "the beautiful city" is an adjective. Adjectives can also function as complements, as in "the city is beautiful."

• Adverbs: An adverb is a word used to modify or describe a verb, adjective, or other adverbs. For example, "quickly" in "he walked quickly" is an adverb modifying the verb "walked." Adverbs can also function as complements, as in "his walk was quickly."

• Pronouns: A pronoun is a word used in place of a noun or pronoun to avoid repeating the same word. For example, "he" in "he walked quickly" is a pronoun standing in for the noun "John." Pronouns can also function as subjects ("He walked quickly") or objects ("He walked quickly").

Understanding parts of speech helps us analyze language and communicate more effectively. By recognizing how these different parts function within a sentence, we can better understand the relationships between words and the meaning conveyed by the sentence as a whole.
