Parts of Speech
- Nouns are words for people, places, things, or animals. Examples include: School, Flower, Ahmed, Wall, Dog.
- Verbs describe actions or events. Examples include: Play, Study, Run.
- Pronouns replace nouns in a sentence. Examples include: I, We, You, He, She, It, They, are examples of pronouns.
- Adjectives describe nouns or pronouns. Examples include: Good, Old, Smart, and describe a noun or pronoun that is before the adjective in the sentence.
- Adverbs describe verbs and sometimes adjectives. They often end in -ly. Examples include: Fast, Quietly.
Pronouns
- Pronouns take the place of nouns in a sentence. They can be subject pronouns, object pronouns, or possessive pronouns.
- Subject pronouns are: He, She, It, I, We, You, They
- Examples of object pronouns include: him, her, it, me, us, you, them
- Possessive pronouns show ownership. Examples include: My, Your, His, Her, Its, Our, Their
Prepositions
- Prepositions show relationships between words in a sentence. Examples include:
- Time: at, on, in
- Place: in, on, to, into, next to, between, in front of, under.
Plural Nouns
- Plural nouns denote more than one.
- Adding 's' to the end of a singular noun is the common way to make it plural.
- Some nouns change their endings to form the plural form such as: pen - pens, girl - girls.
- If the word ends with S, Ch, Sh, X or Z, then add 'es'. Examples: Bus - Buses, Box - Boxes.
- Some words can form the plural by adding 's' or 'es'. Examples include: Mango - Mangos/Mangoes, Flamingo - Flamingos/Flamingoes.
- Some words change in a different way to show plurality, examples include: man - men, woman - women.
Articles
- Articles are used before nouns.
- 'A' and 'an' are used with singular countable nouns.
- 'The', is used with singular or plural nouns. It specifies a particular one of something or someone. Examples: a book, an egg, the teachers.
Adjectives
- Adjectives describe nouns or pronouns. They often come before the noun or pronoun they describe
- Examples include: Tall, Short, Happy, Sad
Adverbs
- Adverbs describe verbs. They tell how, when, where, or to what extent something happened.
- Examples include: Well, Cold, Quietly, Fast, Quickly, Hard, Slowly
Sentence Structure
- Sentences usually follow a structure: Subject + Verb + Object/Complement.
Present Simple Tense
- This tense is used to describe habits, routines, and general truths. It is used with a verb in the simple form. For example: They go to work every day.
Past Simple Tense
- This tense describes actions that happened in the past.
- Regular verbs generally form the past tense by adding -ed.
- Irregular verbs use different forms. For example: He played football last Monday.
