Paragraph Structure
- A paragraph is a group of sentences that support a single main idea.
- The main idea is usually stated in a topic sentence.
- Topic sentences capture the paragraph's central theme.
Supporting Sentences
- Support sentences provide details and expand upon the main idea introduced by the topic sentence.
- Support sentences can be further categorized into major support sentences and minor support sentences.
- Major support sentences directly reinforce the topic sentence.
- Minor support sentences support the major support sentences.
Placing the Topic Sentence
- Ideally, the topic sentence is placed at the beginning of the paragraph.
- It guides the writing process and ensures all sentences contribute to the main idea.
- However, sometimes, the topic sentence can also appear in the middle or at the end of the paragraph.
Paragraph Patterns/Development

- Common paragraph patterns include comparison-contrast, classification-division, cause-and-effect, problem-solution, and persuasion.
