• Peryodista refers to the people who make a living in the field of journalism.
• Pahayagan, Diyaryo, or Peryodiko is a type of publication that contains news, information, and advertisements, and is commonly printed at a low cost.
• 1605 was the year the first periodical was printed.

Roles of a Newspaper

• To be the eyes and ears of the readers

Scope of Journalism

• Pasulat (Print Media) includes newspapers, periodicals, leaflets, and magazines
• Pasalita (Broadcast Media) commonly occurs on the radio (radio broadcast) and typically includes news reports, lectures, speeches, and commentaries.
• Pampaningin involves news coverage on television, including on-the-spot telecasts of news reports, commentaries, announcements, video documentaries, and footages.

First Forms of Newspaper

• Sucesos Felices marked the beginning of journalism in the Philippines with the publication of Tomas Pinpin, a Filipino printer in Manila.
• Aviso al Publico is a Hojas Volantes or "flying sheets;" Al Publico (Notices to the Public) surfaced on February 27, 1799.

First Newspapers Published Regularly

• Del Superior Gobierno was the first newspaper in the Philippines to be published regularly under the patronage of Governor-General Manuel Fernandez de Folgueras.
• La Esperanza, on December 1, 1846, is recognized as the first daily newspaper under the patronage of Felipe Lacorte and Evarisco Calderon.
• Diario De Manila, under the patronage of Felipe del Pan, was published continuously for four years and ceased when many other newspapers came out.
• Boletin Oficial de Filipinas offered its subscribers the opportunity to publish their advertisements up to six lines only.
• Gaceta de Manila was in publication until August 8, 1895, five days before being colonized by the Americans.
• El Comercio was an afternoon newspaper re-established by Joaquin de Loyzaga and Francisco Diaz Puertas.
• Revista de Noticias y Anuncios became La Espafia Oceanica in 1861.
