  • He trained as a lawyer and moved to South Africa in 1893 to represent an Indian merchant.
  • In 1915, he returned to India and soon became involved in the Indian National Congress, leading campaigns for civil rights and self-rule.
  • In 1921, he assumed leadership of the Congress and led nationwide campaigns for improving the conditions of the poor and ending religious violence.
  • In 1947, Britain granted independence to India and the British Indian Empire was partitioned into two dominions.
  • Gandhi did not celebrate independence, instead visiting areas affected by the partition to try to stop religious violence.
  • In 1948, he began a hunger strike to pressure the Indian government to pay Pakistan some money it owed. He completed the strike in January 1949.
  • Gandhi died on January 30, 1948.
