Overview of UPSC Exams

The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) is the central recruiting agency responsible for conducting various competitive examinations and selecting candidates for employment under the government of India. Among the various examinations conducted by UPSC, the most popular ones include the Civil Services Examination, Combined Defense Services Examination, National Defence Academy (NDA), Indian Economic Service (IES)/Indian Statistical Service (ISS) Examination, and many others. These exams aim to assess the aptitude, intelligence, and suitability of candidates for different roles within the Indian bureaucracy and defense forces.

Civil Services Examination (CSE)

The Civil Services Examination is one of the most prestigious and challenging examinations conducted by UPSC. It aims to identify talented individuals who can effectively serve the nation through various positions in the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Foreign Service (IFS), Indian Police Service (IPS), and other central government ministries and departments. The exam consists of three stages: Preliminary, Main, and Personality Test.

Preliminary Stage

Main Stage

Personality Test

Combined Defense Services Examination (CDSE)

The Combined Defense Services Examination is another major examination conducted by UPSC, which focuses on selecting candidates for the Indian Armed Forces, including the Army, Navy, and Air Force. The exam comprises two stages: Written Examination and Personal Interview.

Written Examination

In the written portion of the CDSE, candidates have to answer objective type questions based on four sections: English Language, General Knowledge, Elementary Mathematics, and the selected branch subject. They can choose between engineering, technology, humanities, or management as their branch subject.

Personal Interview

Shortlisted candidates from the written examination are then called for a personal interview conducted by a board of officers to assess their mental ability, leadership qualities, and motivation for joining the armed forces.

UPSC conducts several other competitive examinations throughout the year, such as Engineering Services Examination (ESE), Medical Service Examination (MSE), Geologist Group-A Service Examination, Special Class Railway Apprentice Examination, and others.
