Overview of Science Branches

Science is a broad field of study encompassing various disciplines that seek to understand how our world works through observation, experimentation, and logical inference. These four main branches—biology, chemistry, physics, and Earth science — each offer insights into different aspects of nature, from living organisms to chemical reactions to physical laws, and even our planet itself.

Biology is concerned with studying life processes, including growth, reproduction, evolution, and ecological interactions among species. It has given us an understanding of genetics, immunology, virology, botany, zoology, microbiology, animal behavior, and more. Chemistry deals with the composition, properties, structure, and changes in matter. This branch includes organic chemistry, which focuses on carbon compounds found in living things, inorganic chemistry, which covers non-carbon elements, analytical chemistry, which helps identify unknown materials based on their properties, and physical chemistry, which involves the motion, energy, and thermal properties of atoms and molecules. Physics looks beyond just the material world; it investigates space, time, and energy, in addition to the fundamental forces that govern them. Physical theories like Newton's Laws, Einstein's Theory of Relativity, Quantum Mechanics, Electromagnetism, and others have helped scientists better comprehend universal principles. Lastly, Earth science studies everything related to our planet, its landforms, oceans, atmosphere, climate cycles, rocks, minerals, soils, fossil fuels, natural resources, and environmental systems. It also includes meteorology, geography, oceanography, astronomy, geodesy, seismology, paleontology, anthropology, archaeology, astrogeology, hydrology, and many other fields.
